Balen ShahBalen Shah

Nepal has witnessed a dramatic political development as rapper-turned-politician Balen Shah defeated former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in a major electoral upset. Shah secured a massive victory from the Jhapa-5 constituency in Koshi Province, winning by a margin of nearly 50,000 votes.

According to early election results, the 35-year-old candidate received 68,348 votes, while the 74-year-old veteran leader KP Sharma Oli managed only 18,734 votes. The result marks a significant turning point in Nepal’s political landscape.

Shah is the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), a relatively new political force that has gained strong support among young voters.

Rising Chances of an RSP Government

With the latest election trends, the Rastriya Swatantra Party appears to be heading toward forming the next government in Nepal.

Early trends have been reported from 165 parliamentary seats. By around 6:30 PM, official results had been declared for 78 seats, with RSP already winning 62 seats and leading in 60 more constituencies.

If the trend continues, Nepal could see a major shift away from traditional political parties. Analysts say this election reflects growing public demand for clean governance, transparency, and political reform.

From Independent Mayor to National Leader

Balen Shah first gained national attention in 2022, when he was elected as the independent Mayor of Kathmandu. His victory was widely seen as a sign that Nepal’s youth wanted new leadership outside the traditional political system.

During his tenure as mayor, Shah launched several reform initiatives. His administration focused on urban cleanliness, waste management, and infrastructure development in Kathmandu. These initiatives earned him praise from many citizens and increased his popularity.

His image as a reformist leader helped him gain strong support among young voters across the country.

Refused Interim Government Leadership

Nepal experienced political unrest in September last year. Violent protests erupted across the country over corruption allegations and restrictions on social media.

Large numbers of Generation-Z protesters participated in demonstrations that eventually led to the collapse of the coalition government led by KP Sharma Oli.

At that time, Balen Shah was reportedly offered the opportunity to lead an interim government. However, he declined the proposal.

Shah stated that he preferred to seek a democratic mandate through elections rather than lead a temporary administration. His decision strengthened his reputation as a leader committed to democratic principles.

Joining the Rastriya Swatantra Party

In January 2026, Balen Shah joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) led by Ravi Lamichhane. Soon after joining the party, he was declared the Prime Ministerial candidate.

The RSP has presented a 100-point manifesto focused on administrative reform and digital governance. The party promises to provide online government services, reduce bureaucratic corruption, and build a transparent and accountable administrative system.

The manifesto also aims to separate politics from administrative decision-making to improve efficiency.

Balen Shah’s Background

Balen Shah was born in Kathmandu, though his family originally comes from Madhesh Province. His father, Ram Narayan Shah, is an Ayurvedic doctor, while his mother Dhruvadevi Shah is a homemaker.

From an early age, Shah showed strong interest in music and poetry. While studying, he began performing rap music that addressed social issues such as corruption, inequality, and everyday struggles of common people.

He studied Civil Engineering in Kathmandu and later completed a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka, India.

In 2018, he married Sabina Kafle, and the couple welcomed their daughter in 2023.

Popular Rapper with Massive Online Following

Apart from politics, Balen Shah is also a well-known figure in Nepal’s music industry.

His YouTube channel @BalenShah has nearly 1 million subscribers. He released his first rap song “Sadak Balak” in 2012, which gained popularity among young audiences.

In 2013, he participated in a YouTube battle rap series, which helped him gain national recognition. His songs often highlight issues such as social inequality, corruption, and youth frustrations.

Global Recognition and Unique Political Style

In 2023, Balen Shah was included in Time Magazine’s list of the Top 100 Emerging Leaders, highlighting his growing global influence.

He is often recognized for his distinctive public image, frequently appearing in black sunglasses and a black blazer.

During political rallies, Shah is also known for ringing a bell symbol, the official election symbol of his party, to signal political change and challenge traditional parties.

A New Political Era in Nepal

Balen Shah’s victory over a veteran leader like KP Sharma Oli represents a major generational shift in Nepalese politics.

Political analysts believe that the rise of leaders like Shah reflects a broader movement toward youth leadership, transparency, and modern governance in Nepal.

If current election trends continue, the country may soon witness the formation of a government led by the Rastriya Swatantra Party, potentially reshaping Nepal’s political future.
