Chemical Weapons Serious allegations have emerged from British lawmakers and Israeli intelligence sources claiming that Iran has carried out a covert chemical campaign to suppress nationwide protests. According to these reports, thousands of Iranian protesters may have died not through direct executions, police shootings, or hangings, but through exposure to toxic chemical substances allegedly deployed during demonstrations.

The reports claim that while Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s government officially pardoned around 800 rebels from execution, thousands of anti-government demonstrators were allegedly killed using “delayed-action chemical agents” that caused death days after exposure.

Claims by British and Israeli Sources

British MP Bill Rammell has stated that intelligence inputs available to him indicate the use of toxic chemical substances against Iranian protesters. While these claims have not yet been independently verified, he described the intelligence as “credible and deeply concerning.”

Israeli intelligence reports echo similar concerns, alleging that Iranian security forces used chemical-laced tear gas shells and poisoned water cannons during protests on January 8 and 9. According to these claims, the chemicals did not cause immediate death but led to severe health complications that proved fatal days later.

Symptoms and Rising Deaths

Protesters allegedly exposed to these substances reportedly experienced:

  • Severe throat irritation

  • High fever

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Gradual failure of vital organs

Medical sources cited in the reports claim a sudden spike in deaths due to multi-organ failure across Iran in recent days. Many individuals reportedly died at home or in hospitals several days after being released from detention.

One widely circulated video from the city of Sabzevar is being cited by opposition groups as potential evidence of a chemical attack conspiracy, though authorities have not confirmed its authenticity.

Alleged Strategy: “Delayed Chemical Attack”

According to the intelligence claims, Iran has adopted a new method to suppress dissent — a delayed chemical attack strategy. Protesters are allegedly arrested, exposed to toxic substances, released, and then die days later, making it difficult to establish direct responsibility.

Reports also claim:

  • Iranian prisons are overcrowded due to mass arrests

  • Families are detained along with protesters

  • Lawyers are denied access to detainees

  • Legal assistance is effectively blocked

Role of IRGC and Quds Force

The reports allege that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its elite Quds Force, along with allied proxy groups, were directly involved in the violent crackdown during the January protests. While many protesters were reportedly killed by gunfire on the streets, intelligence claims suggest that more deaths occurred later inside homes and hospitals due to chemical exposure.

Iran’s History of Alleged Chemical Use

Iran has previously been accused of using chemical agents during protests. During the 2022 demonstrations, a “green gas” was reportedly used, identified as Adamsite or Hexachloroethane, which causes nausea, irritation, and temporary paralysis but is not typically fatal.

However, the current allegations are far more serious. Intelligence reports claim the possible use of lethal chemical agents, including:

  • Sulfur Mustard (Mustard Gas):
Absorbed through inhalation, damages the respiratory system and bone marrow, causes DNA-level injury, and can lead to fatal pneumonia within 14 days.

  • Phosgene:
A colorless industrial chemical that attacks the lungs. Victims may feel normal initially, but fatal respiratory failure can occur within five days. Chemical Weapons Chemical Weapons Chemical Weapons

  • Lewisite:
An arsenic-based chemical agent causing eye irritation, breathing distress, and rapid multi-organ failure within 72 hours.

Global Silence and Strategic Implications

Despite the gravity of these allegations, the international community has so far taken no decisive action. Analysts suggest that fear generated by these deaths has effectively suppressed protests inside Iran.

Some geopolitical observers are describing the situation as a major strategic setback for former US President Donald Trump, arguing that Iran’s alleged tactics neutralized protest movements while limiting immediate international retaliation.

At the same time, others believe these intelligence reports could provide Washington with fresh justification for harsher action against Tehran. Whether the alleged use of chemical weapons will prompt global intervention remains uncertain.

Unverified but Alarming Allegations

It is important to note that Iran has denied all allegations of chemical weapon use, and no independent international investigation has yet confirmed these claims. However, if proven true, the alleged actions would represent a grave violation of international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention.

As calls grow louder for an international probe, the world watches closely to see whether these reports will finally trigger accountability — or fade into silence.
