Natanz Nuclear SiteNatanz Nuclear Site

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after reports emerged that Iran’s key nuclear facility at Natanz Nuclear Facility was targeted in a suspected strike involving the United States and Israel on Saturday. However, conflicting statements from officials have created uncertainty around the incident.

According to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, the Natanz enrichment complex was attacked early in the morning. The facility, located about 220 km southeast of Tehran, is one of Iran’s most critical uranium enrichment sites.

No Radiation Leak, Says IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that it had been informed about the incident by Iranian authorities. The UN nuclear watchdog stated that there has been no increase in off-site radiation levels, indicating that there is no immediate risk to nearby populations.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urged all sides to exercise restraint. He reiterated the need to avoid any military actions that could trigger a nuclear accident, especially during ongoing regional tensions.

Media reports quoting Iranian officials also confirmed that no radioactive material has been released. Residents living near the facility are currently not in danger, authorities said.

Israel Denies Strike Claims

Despite Iran’s claims, Israeli officials have denied carrying out any attack on the Natanz facility. This has added confusion to the situation, as earlier reports suggested coordinated action involving both the US and Israel.

The White House, meanwhile, reiterated that its strategic objective remains preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Officials referenced ongoing tensions that began earlier this year, highlighting concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Russia Condemns ‘Violation of International Law’

Russia strongly condemned the reported strike, calling it a “clear violation of international law.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized the alleged actions of the US and Israel, accusing them of disregarding civilian safety and potential environmental consequences.

Zakharova emphasized that the Natanz facility operates under IAEA safeguards, making any attack on it a breach of international agreements, including UN charters and Security Council resolutions.

She urged the global community, including the UN and IAEA leadership, to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Risk of Wider Middle East Conflict

Russia also warned that such actions could destabilize the entire Middle East region. According to Zakharova, the strike poses a real threat of large-scale destruction and undermines efforts to maintain peace and stability.

The situation remains highly volatile, with fears that continued escalation could lead to a broader regional conflict.

Background: Previous Attacks on Natanz

This is not the first time the Natanz facility has come under attack. During a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel in June 2025, the site was also targeted, causing damage to several buildings.

Satellite images from earlier this year indicated that parts of the nuclear infrastructure had been hit in previous strikes. Iran had earlier claimed that even its underground uranium enrichment facilities were attacked.

Israel Warns of Intensified Operations

Amid rising tensions, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that military operations against Iran could intensify in the coming days. He stated that joint actions involving Israeli forces and US support may increase significantly over the next week.

“This week will see a sharp escalation in operations targeting Iran’s infrastructure,” Katz said, signaling a potential expansion of military activity.
