A national seminar on “Environmental Protection” was successfully organized at Motilal Nehru College as part of the ongoing Bharat Manthan 2026 series under University of Delhi. The event marked the second day of the multi-institutional academic initiative focused on Panch Parivartan and human welfare. The seminar was organized by the Department of Environmental Science of Motilal Nehru College in collaboration with Indraprastha Study Centre, the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB), Jawaharlal Nehru University, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, and Central University of Haryana. Grand Inauguration with Focus on Sustainability The seminar began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony attended by distinguished guests. The event set the tone for meaningful discussions on environmental sustainability and ecological responsibility. Prof. Yogeshwar Sharma, Principal of Motilal Nehru College, welcomed the guests and participants. In his address, he highlighted the deep connection between nature and human life. He warned that the current generation’s reckless exploitation of natural resources poses a serious threat not only to the environment but also to human survival. He emphasized the need for urgent action to restore ecological balance. Keynote Address Highlights Root Causes The keynote speaker, Vishal Ji, delivered an impactful speech addressing environmental challenges from both local and global perspectives. He discussed rising pollution levels in Delhi and broader environmental concerns affecting the world. According to him, the root cause of environmental degradation lies in human greed and excessive consumption. He stressed that unless society curbs its unsustainable lifestyle, restoring ecological balance will remain difficult. Quoting the Atharva Veda, “Putro’ham Prithivyah” (I am a son of the Earth), he urged individuals to treat the planet with responsibility and care. Emphasis on ‘Refuse’ Alongside 3R Principle While discussing environmental solutions, the speaker highlighted the traditional 3R principle—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. He further emphasized the importance of adding a fourth principle: “Refuse.” He explained that refusing unnecessary consumption is a crucial step toward sustainable living. According to him, environmental protection begins with a change in mindset and personal responsibility. Institutional Vision and Participation Special guest Vinod Sharma ‘Vivek’, head of Indraprastha Study Centre, shared insights into the institution’s intellectual journey. He explained how the center actively engages with contemporary social issues and promotes meaningful academic discourse. The seminar witnessed strong participation from academicians, researchers, and students across various institutions. A total of 74 participants registered for the event. Research Presentations and Academic Dialogue During the technical and parallel sessions, participants presented around 30 research papers on diverse environmental topics. These included discussions on climate change, sustainable development, pollution control, and ecological conservation. The sessions encouraged active engagement and critical thinking. Scholars exchanged ideas and explored practical solutions to environmental challenges. Plantation Drive Promotes Action-Oriented Awareness In a significant step toward action-oriented environmental awareness, a plantation drive was organized at the college campus. Chief guests and participants planted saplings in the garden near the college library. This initiative symbolized the commitment to translating environmental awareness into tangible action. Part of Larger Bharat Manthan Initiative The seminar forms part of the broader Bharat Manthan 2026 program, which is being held from April 5 to April 11 across various colleges of Delhi University. The first day focused on “Kutumb Prabodhan” at Deshbandhu College, while the second day at Motilal Nehru College centered on environmental protection.
