MS Dhoni, former captain of the Indian cricket team, has filed a trademark application for the phrase ‘Captain Cool’, a title long associated with his composed and tactical leadership style. The application was officially accepted and advertised by India’s Trade Marks Registry, with its publication appearing in the official trademark journal on June 16. The filing was made earlier on June 5, 2025.

The trademark covers multiple categories, including sports training, coaching, facilities, and related services — indicating Dhoni’s possible plans to expand his presence in the sports and mentorship ecosystem.

Captain Cool: Now a Legal Identity

‘Captain Cool’ has been synonymous with Dhoni for over a decade, reflecting his unshakable calm under pressure and instinct-driven decision-making. While the nickname has been used by fans and commentators alike, this official trademark move now aims to legally secure the iconic title under Dhoni’s brand.

It is worth noting that another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, had previously filed for the same trademark. However, their application now stands under a ‘rectification filed’ status, possibly due to a legal challenge or duplication concerns.

ICC Hall of Fame Induction 2025

This development follows closely after Dhoni’s induction into the ICC Hall of Fame Class of 2025, a prestigious honour that recognizes his incredible impact on the game. He joins global cricketing greats like Matthew Hayden of Australia and Hashim Amla of South Africa in this year’s class.

In its official statement, the International Cricket Council (ICC) praised Dhoni not just for his numbers but for his unparalleled leadership and long-lasting influence:

“Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, MS Dhoni’s legacy as one of the game’s greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.”

A Captain Who Redefined Indian Cricket

Taking over India’s captaincy in 2007, Dhoni led the team through a golden era of success. His major achievements include:

  • Winning the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007

  • Lifting the 2011 ODI World Cup on home soil

  • Clinching the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy

He remains the only captain in cricket history to win all three ICC white-ball trophies. His leadership saw India briefly rise to No. 1 in Test rankings, while his commitment to nurturing young talent left an enduring legacy.

Beyond the Field

From leading with calmness on the field to creating a brand around it, Dhoni’s journey is now expanding into legal and commercial spaces. The ‘Captain Cool’ trademark could pave the way for sports academies, mentorship platforms, or branded merchandise, further solidifying his identity beyond the pitch.
