WhatsApp has officially rolled out a new AI-powered feature called Message Summaries, designed to help users quickly catch up on unread messages in both individual and group chats. Powered by Meta AI, the feature uses cutting-edge privacy infrastructure known as Private Processing, which ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can read users’ messages or summaries.

What Are Message Summaries?

Announced via an official blog post, Message Summaries offers users a bullet-point view of key messages by simply tapping the “Unread messages” icon within a chat. The feature is entirely optional and disabled by default, giving users full control over its use.

The summarised content is labelled “visible only to you”, indicating that it is not shared with other participants in the chat. The summaries are generated using Meta AI, but with robust privacy protocols ensuring complete message confidentiality.

Powered by Private Processing

At the heart of this feature lies Meta’s Private Processing technology. This computing infrastructure is built on the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), designed to maintain user privacy even during real-time AI interactions.

Meta outlines three foundational principles for Private Processing:

  1. Confidential Processing: No internal or external systems, including Meta itself, can access user messages during or after processing.

  2. Enforceable Guarantees: If the system is tampered with or compromised, it either shuts down or publicly reveals the interference through a system of verifiable transparency.

  3. Auditability: Security researchers and users can audit Private Processing systems to validate Meta’s privacy and security claims.

Additional layers such as non-targetability, stateless processing, and forward security reinforce the integrity of this AI infrastructure.

Advanced Chat Privacy

Along with Private Processing, users can also opt into Advanced Chat Privacy. This feature enables users to highlight specific texts they wish to summarise, adding a new layer of personalization and control to the experience.

Rollout Details

For now, the Message Summaries feature is being gradually rolled out to users in the United States, and only in the English language. Meta plans to expand the availability of the feature to other languages and regions later this year.

A Glimpse into the Future of Messaging

With this update, WhatsApp is moving towards more intelligent and privacy-conscious messaging, offering users both convenience and trust. As AI becomes a core part of everyday communication, WhatsApp’s approach — balancing innovation with user privacy — sets a strong precedent for other platforms to follow.
