WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could make sharing Instagram Reels directly in chats easier for Android users. The feature introduces a dedicated Instagram Reels shortcut in the app’s chat attachment menu, allowing users to browse and share videos without repeatedly opening the media picker.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.42.9. The update is available through the Google Play Store for eligible beta testers.

However, the feature is not yet available to all beta users. WhatsApp has also not announced an official release date for the wider rollout.

WhatsApp Adds an Instagram Reels Shortcut to Chats

The new feature is designed to simplify how users find and share Instagram Reels while chatting on WhatsApp. A dedicated button in the attachment menu will allow eligible users to access selected content from their Instagram activity.

Instead of switching between apps to find a video, users will be able to browse eligible Reels through the new shortcut and share their selections directly in a WhatsApp conversation.

Recently Viewed, Liked and Saved Reels

According to the report, the shortcut will provide access to three sections of Instagram activity:

  • Recently viewed Reels: Find videos watched recently on Instagram.
  • Liked Reels: Browse videos that the user has liked.
  • Saved Reels: Access videos saved for viewing later.

Users will be able to select a Reel from these sections and share it with friends, family members or other WhatsApp contacts.

The feature could reduce the steps required to share a video, particularly when users want to send a Reel they have already watched or saved.

WhatsApp and Instagram Accounts Must Be Linked

Access to the new shortcut will require users to link their WhatsApp account through Meta’s Accounts Centre.

Once the accounts are linked, eligible users should be able to access the Reels shortcut from the WhatsApp chat attachment menu when the feature is available to them.

Meta’s Accounts Centre allows users to manage connected accounts and certain connected experiences across its platforms. However, linking accounts is not mandatory for using WhatsApp or Instagram separately.

Users who prefer to keep their accounts separate can continue using both apps without linking them. In that case, they will not be able to use this particular WhatsApp Reels shortcut, according to the reported feature requirements.

How Is the New Feature Different From Existing Sharing Options?

WhatsApp already allows users to share Instagram Reels, posts and other content through existing sharing options. However, finding a particular video can require additional steps, especially when users need to return to Instagram and locate it again.

The new shortcut aims to make this process more direct by allowing users to browse selected Instagram activity from within WhatsApp.

A Simpler Way to Share Videos

With the proposed feature, users may no longer need to search through their Instagram activity separately before sharing a previously viewed, liked or saved Reel.

The change could be useful for people who frequently exchange short videos in individual chats and group conversations.

However, the feature is currently in testing. Its final design, availability and functionality may change before a wider release.

WhatsApp Reels Shortcut: Beta Version and Availability

WABetaInfo reported that the feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.42.9, distributed through the Google Play Store.

The rollout is limited to selected beta testers. Therefore, installing the reported beta version does not guarantee that the new shortcut will appear in every user’s attachment menu.

WhatsApp often tests features with a limited group of users before making them more widely available. This approach allows the company to assess functionality and make changes before a public release.

When Will the Feature Reach All Users?

WhatsApp has not announced a confirmed date for the feature’s general availability. There is also no confirmed information about when, or whether, the same shortcut will be introduced on iOS.

Android users who do not see the option may need to wait for a future rollout. Availability will depend on WhatsApp’s testing and release decisions.

For now, the Instagram Reels shortcut remains a feature under testing rather than a confirmed addition for all WhatsApp users.

The reported update focuses on reducing the effort needed to share Instagram videos within WhatsApp conversati
