Bhagalpur Ganga Erosion Threatens Raghopur Village, Families Shift to Safer Areas

Bhagalpur, Bihar: Rapid erosion along the Ganga River has triggered concern in Raghopur village of Bihar’s Bhagalpur district, forcing several families to move their belongings to safer locations. Residents fear that continued erosion could threaten homes, public infrastructure and religious sites if preventive measures fail.

Large sections of land near the riverbank have reportedly been affected by erosion in recent days. Villagers said the situation has worsened due to the increasing pressure of the Ganga’s current, creating uncertainty among families living close to the river.

Old Railway Embankment Provides Temporary Protection

According to local residents, an old railway embankment is currently acting as a protective barrier between the village and the advancing river. Villagers said the structure has played a crucial role in preventing immediate damage to residential areas.

However, concerns remain high over the speed of erosion. Residents fear that if the embankment weakens, the village could face a serious threat. Many families have started taking precautionary measures amid uncertainty about the river’s next course.

Locals described the railway embankment as the village’s primary shield against the erosion. They said its condition will be critical in determining the safety of the area in the coming days.

District Administration Closely Monitoring Situation

Bhagalpur District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey has been regularly visiting the affected area and reviewing the situation on the ground. Officials from various departments have also been directed to monitor developments and coordinate response measures.

The district administration has instructed the Water Resources Department to undertake all necessary efforts to protect the village from further erosion. Officials have also appealed to residents not to panic and assured them that preventive measures are being implemented.

Authorities continue to assess vulnerable locations while monitoring changes in the river’s flow and the condition of protective structures.

Families Shift Belongings Amid Fear of Further Erosion

The growing risk has forced several families to begin relocating household items and essential belongings. Tractors loaded with furniture, utensils and other goods have been seen moving towards safer locations.

Residents said they do not want to take chances if the situation worsens suddenly. Some families have partially vacated their homes, while others are preparing contingency plans to move if required.

Villagers expressed concern that any sudden damage to the embankment could leave them with little time to respond. As a result, many have already started transferring valuables and essential items to safer places.

The situation has created anxiety among local residents, many of whom have spent generations living in the village. Families fear that continued erosion could threaten both their homes and livelihoods.

Religious Sites Also Under Threat

The erosion has also raised concerns about the safety of important religious sites in the village. Residents reported that the Durga Temple and Barham Baba Sthan are now located close to erosion-prone areas.

Local community members said these sites hold significant cultural and religious importance. Any damage to them would be a major loss for the village.

Villagers have urged authorities to strengthen protection measures around vulnerable locations and accelerate erosion-control efforts before the situation deteriorates further.

Erosion-Control Measures Underway

Officials have initiated erosion-control operations in the affected region. The measures include the use of geo-bags, bamboo bundles and large tree structures to strengthen the riverbank and reduce the impact of water flow.

The administration is continuing efforts to prevent further land loss and safeguard residential areas. Technical teams are monitoring the effectiveness of the ongoing measures and assessing additional requirements.

With the Ganga River continuing to exert pressure on the riverbank, authorities remain focused on minimizing damage and protecting affected communities. The situation in Raghopur village remains under close observation as erosion-control work continues in the area.
